Many of you have either college age children or children about to enter college.
Alice Hamachek wrote a book called "Coping with College".
I make all my computer science students read it.

It is a light and easy book to read.
It is difficult for many students to apply the concepts it contains.
However, if they could apply them - it would be a difference maker. They would have great success.
It turns out that the topics learned in college are not difficult.
What the average to poor student needs to do is develop a daily system of effective study.
The average to poor student could change his/her academic life if he/she could figure out "how to study".

Many of these students do not learn how to study in high school. They can get by without doing it.
Particularly in non-accelerated courses.
So, they never really learned how to study.

A more intense book on the subject matter is Harry Maddox's age old ... "How to Study".
It is fairly dense, but chock full of important information.

The difference between a kid who is ranked in the top 10 of their HS class and the kid
who has a much much lower rank is study habits. I do not believe the large difference is due to
grey matter between the ears. There are zillions of very bright kids whose class rank is low.

In fact, there are lots of "average intellect" kids who figured out how to study and are ranked 8/400.
It is about figuring out how to work.

The good news is that a kid who is just getting by can be inspired to achieve academically.
Once they get the bug, they are academic dynamos.

Remember:   Reading, Writing, 'Rithmatic.

While ceramics + microsoft word may be fun/easy, their impact on your child is minimal unless they have a writing component to them.

---

Okay, pop quiz:  There are three types of verbs. What are they?

Answer: Transitive, Intransitive, and Linking.

----------

 Ok, so here's the deal.

Many of you know that I read and listen to lots of fiction books these days.
The commute to work and back for me is 35 minutes each way.
What is your commute?

There are a lot of books that we should have read way back when but did not.
Life got in your way.

One alternative to Imus in the morning or a music station or even worse Jim and Margery (ugh) is listening to a good old-fashion book or CD or tape.
Where do I get them? From the libraries: Pepperell's Lawrence, Townsend, and Groton.
There is also a large (huge) network of libraries to which these libraries belong.
In essence, you can get any book from most any library in Central and Western MA.

There is tremendous personal value in listening to these books.  After a while they collectively
paint a mosaic of life across the generations and cultures. The things we struggle with today are
the same issues that are described in the great novels. These books help to clarify your thoughts.

There are intense books. There are light books. I can recommend one to two if you ask.

I am trying to make it through the top 100 or so of the greatest novels of all-time.
As I am older than most of you,  I feel like I am running out of time.

You 30-somethings and 40-somethings --- if possible -- I encourage you to start using those minutes in your car if you can.

On the light side is Anne of Green Gables. This is presently referred to as a children's book.
It was written in 1908 by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
It chronicles the early years in the life of Anne Shirley. It is not intellectually taxing. It is a nice book.
We should all have Anne Shirley's imagination and way-of-being inside of us.

When it was published, the reviews were so good that  Lucy Maud then wrote additional books about Anne that chronicles the rest of her life.
I am presently listening to Anne of Avonlea. This is the second book in the series. Easy listening.

Join in the conversation and start picking some of the classics off.

This is example #1. It is Alphonso Soriano.  Notice how his weigh has left his back leg. There is no weight left on his back side just before impact. Notice his stiff front leg. You can see that he is not lunging. The bat is tilted. It is not a level swing. Virtually all major league hitters use this swing. That is why they made it to the majors.  His swing plane is an upward arc. It matches the pitch. I would say his back foot has even lifted off of the ground.

This is Derek Jeter using the major league swing. This is what you should be teaching your little leaguers. This is what your Babe Ruth batters should be doing. His weight has left his back side and it is transferred into his stiff front leg. This is not a lunge. It is a thing of beauty. This is not linear. This is rotational. It is what made Ted Williams so famous. It is what Roberto Clemente used. It is what  99% of professional hitters do. How do you think they became professional? They crushed the baseball. Your hitting drills should promote this style. The bat is not level with the ground. The "bug" has not been squished. If you add a dose of courage into the batter, he will crush.
Instant offense
.

Learn the Major League Swing
How about one more example. Here is example #3. It is David Eckstein. His weight has completely left his back side. In fact his back foot is off the ground. The bat is tilted, even though the pitch is high in the strike zone. How about that stiff front leg. Don't you dare call that a lunge. His hips have rotated fully. This is the goal. This is what you should be teaching your batters.

Bill Russell
Former Captain of the Boston Celtics

William Felton Russell is the greatest basketball player of all time.
When he laced up his sneakers, his teams won.
In his last fifteen years of playing, he won 14 championships.
Two NCAA championships.
His college team finished 55-0 in his last two years.
An Olympic Gold Medal.
Eleven NBA titles in thirteen years.
He won with different players alongside him.
How fitting it is that the NBA has finally recognized his achievement.
Whenever I have driven through the Ted Williams Tunnel,
I cannot help thinking that it should be named The Bill Russell Tunnel.
Williams' record in our armed services is the only difference maker.
On field accomplishments?
It is Russell.
In the recent words of NBA great Bill Walton,
the only stat that matters is the scoreboard.
Russell dominates that statistic.

Do not give me Kobe Bryant. Please.

Who are We?

In 2007, Team Gauss was formed to provide a low-cost baseball playing experience for local young men. We are a collection of 13-17 year old baseball players. We find games against other local teams and we can provide reasonable competition to fill their open slots. We are primarily based out of Pepperell, Massachusetts. We will travel over an hour to get to a game. We will split the cost of patched umpires and we will supply game baseballs. Many of us play in the Leominster Babe Ruth League, Pepperell Senior League, North Middlesex JVs, and a few play on the varsity. Some of us play on AAU teams too. We are trying to get at bats, work on our skills, have some fun, and avoid mischief. We try to bring no more than 10 players to any given game. That way, if you come - you'll play. We draw from a larger pool of local players.

The marine fitness test has 3 components:

Pull Ups or Chin Ups
Crunches - Marine Sit ups
3 Mile Run

Goal 1: Score 65 points on the Marine Fitness Test

THE ARMSTRONG PULLUP PROGRAM

Developed by Major Charles Lewis Armstrong, USMC, this program consists of two workouts per day, five days a week.  Most people who stick with this program are able to do 20 pullups within 4 to 6 weeks.

Every morning, do three maximum effort sets of push-ups.  Major Armstrong said that he would get out of bed and hit the floor to do his first max set.  He would then go and shave, and return to do his next set.  A few minutes later, he would do his third maximum effort set.  The push up is one of the best exercises to develop arm strength for pull-ups.  The rest of the routine goes like this:

Monday            Do five max effort sets of pull-ups, resting one minute between each set

Tuesday            Do a pyramid of repetitions, starting with one pull-up then 10 seconds of rest, 2 pull-ups and 20 seconds of rest, 3 pull-ups and 30 seconds of rest, and so on until you are unable to do more repetitions than your previous set.

Wednesday        Do three “training sets” of overhand pull-ups three sets of underhand pull-ups, and three sets of overhand pull-ups where the back of your neck touches the bar.  A training set is dictated by your current level of strength.  If you are advanced, it might be 5 or 6.  Rest one minute between sets.  The goal of the workout is to do the same number of repetitions per set, so start off conservatively, if you can only do 1, use one.

Thursday            Do training sets, resting one minute between each set, until you are unable to complete a set.  Use the same number of repetitions that you used in your Wednesday sets.  This will probably turn out to be your longest (and hardest) day.

Friday                Repeat the day that you had the most trouble with during the week.

Take the weekends off.  Your muscles will need this time to recover.  Females can adapt the flexed arm hang to this program by simply replacing repetitions with hang times.  The key to this program is regularity and COMMITMENT.  If you follow the program consistently, you should see improvement within a few weeks.

It will be a great day when I can do 1 chin up.

A 55 year male who can score 65 points in the Marine Fitness test would earn a 3rd class classification. This would do it:

3 pull ups or chin cups
40 crunches

If he can score 100 points, he would earn a 2nd class classification.

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before,
but had once failed an entire class.
--------------------------------------------

That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK,
we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".

All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.
The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D!
No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering,
blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that.

Want to Crush a Baseball?
Learn the Major League Swing.

  • The batter should load with a slight coiling backwards.
  • The batter should come forward to set a stiff front leg.
  • The back foot should release by rolling it forward/up on the toes.
  • The batter should feed  his weight into the stiff front leg as he swings.
  • No weight remains on the backside.
  • No squishing of the bug.
  • The swing is not level.
  • The bat is tilted and it pursues a circular arc.
  • The finish is high.
This is a rotational approach.

This is not a lunge.  This is not a linear approach.

Please do not call it linear.

This is what 99% of all major league hitters do.

Remember!

Hands, Weight, Foot ..... Foot, Weight, Hands

Do not squish the bug.
Your swing is not level with the ground.
Your swing should deliver the bat "square" to the ball.

Generate some lift.

In order for this to work, you need to have the courage to come out.

Remember. This is not a lunge to the front-side.

Allow your back heel to roll upwards.

Do not bury the back heel into the ground. Never!

You must be free. Do not lock up. Find your rythym.

C'mon Out. Get to the Front. C'mon out. Get out there!

Do not let the pitcher beat you back. C'mon out!

For heaven's sake - Get Out there!

This is not a weight back, pivot the back foot strategy.

This is not a lunge.

Got it?

A whiteboard is a very useful tool for a college student.
The bigger the better.
College students should have their own whiteboard in their apartment or room.
It helps you collect your thoughts.
Work on problems.
Organize ideas. Students need to doodle.  It is an ideal gift.

Who are your greatest heroes in literature?
Here are  my three:

Atticus Finch
He, perhaps, is the greatest father that ever lived.

Jean Valjean
He understood that it is about others.

Sidney Carton
"It is a far far better thing that I do, than I have ever done. It is a far far better rest that I go to than I have ever known."

Ok, just one more. Albert Puljols has a stiff front leg. His weight has left his back side. His back heel does not squish any bugs. The bat is square to the ball , but it is not level to the ground. His hips are rotated perfectly. This was a home run. This photo and the other three photos came from a website by Chris O'Leary. Mr. O'Leary has got it right. This is the swing taught by Coach Caswell. It is not a linear swing. It is a rotational swing. The ball is about to leave the ballpark. Your youngster should learn this swing at an early age. It is quite possible for a relatively small Pepperell, MA boy to hit one over the fence at Bartleson field. That is the definition of joy. I've seen it many times. In fact, my last little league team did it 13 times. Eight different players. Go Braves.

2008 Leominster Babe Ruth
Champions

25 wins  - 0 losses

This team outscored their opponents by 198 runs in 25 games. There was a mercy rule in effect. They crushed the ball on a regular basis. Hitter 1 through hitter 9. All season long. Nine times we went yard: Matt Canning (3), Matt Foley(2), Doug Baird(3), Matt Heisler(1). All batters were a threat to pound the ball. It did not matter if the pitcher was throwing heat or not.  Time him up.

These champions are:

Kevin Quin, Zach Caraviello, Matt Canning, Josh Mihill, Matt Foley, Justin Roberts, Matt Heisler, Mark Canning, Nick Ravanis, Abe Mughal, Brandon Cole, Chris Canning, Michael Chase, Cameron Gouldrup, Doug Baird
